08/07/2008      South Wales Borderers Affiliate

AFRA is very proud to announce that the South Wales Borderers have made a decision to affiliate. We would like to welcome them to the Association and to acknowledge their efforts over the past 15 years in representing one of the most illustrious regiments in the British Army. Most famously, the actions at Rorkes Drift in 1879. Paul and Wendy are amongst the best known faces in the hobby and it is an indication of the faith they place in AFRA that they have come on board. 23/05/2008      Growing Fast!

AFRA now has over 250 members! We are the fastest growing Association in the UK and it is due to the membership themselves. Word of mouth is helping to spread the message. Many people are realising that AFRA is NOT a group. It is not a group of groups. AFRA is an independent Association to which all Living Historians, Re-enactors and people with a bona fide active interest in Living History of the 20th Century can belong. There is much made of the fact that we need a body which issues an "idenitfying card". There is much talk of "recognition" and also of "Legitimacy". Remember - As long as you stay within the law, what you do IS legitimate. What we at AFRA are doing is giving people an option to voluntarily form one central organisation to which ALL can belong. AFRA is the only organisation at present proving that it is benign, that it supports and that it provides benefits of membership. we are also able to prove that we have NO allegiance to any particular aspect or "side" in the Living History World. No one as yet has had any cause for concern regarding the conduct of AFRA or its officers. AFRA exists simply to bring people together, without prejudice or agenda save that of forming one representative body to which all eventually can contribute. So thanks to those pioneering souls who have joined early. Welcome to those about to join and We'll see you soon to those still thinking about it. AFRA - Leading the Way and Proving the Point. Actions Speak Louder than Words. read more »

Stoneleigh was a runaway success. Lots of people in attendance - Loads of faces. Thanks to all for the interest shown in AFRA. We took some memberships there, handed out over 50 cards to new members and had many lively discussions about the Association. It seems the message is getting through. We expect to hear from a lot of poeple very shortly - Remember the season starts from here and if you want/need the best PLI available, a growing network of contacts and parnterships - AFRA is the way forwards. To our friends old and new - Here's to a damned good 2008 - COME WHAT MAY! read more »

19/01/2008      Forums For Re-enactors

While there are many good forums out there (and some dire ones too) The AFRA membership have their own which is used to communicate between themselves and arrange all sorts of "business" related to Living HIstory/Re-enactment. Two forums have been set up which whilst separate, combine Allied and Axis elements to attempt to avoid the friction often found on these boards. http://www.alliedforum.net/index.php Is an Allied Forum which is brand new and rapidly expanding - Might be worth taking a look for a fresh approach to communications and information. The other is http://www.panzergrenadier.net/forum/index.php An established Axis interest Forums which is both whacky and worthwhile. Seldom do arguments and strife breakout - Information is freely given and exhanged and people have a friendly family manner on there. Take a look and maybe give them a go - If you are interested in or looking to participate in WWII Living History or Re-enactment at all - You could do worse than start here. read more »

11/01/2008      Deactivated Weapons Under Threat from Home Secretary

Jan 10 and the Government delivers a new body blow to the future of our hobby as we know it. In a statement that was of no suprise to some of us , Home Secretary Jaqui Smith announced plans to "ban" all pre 1995 deactivated weapons under the transparent excuse of "reactivation to commit crime" Whilst it is accepted that SOME weapons can be reactivated - they often present more of a danger to the user than the intended victim.. What really lies behind this is a sweeping generalisation to assuage the general public. A hardened critic could suggest vote winning tactics. AFRA however keeps away from the political line and prefers to work for its members. The truth of this matter is - The problem does NOT lie with deactivated weapons - Many of which are unsuitable or unfashionable to use for criminal purposes..... The real danger lies with illegal importation of genuine, live firearms from Eastern Bloc Countries and other sources. These should be targetted and halted. Re-enactors are for the most part, reasonable law abiding citizens - The demographic that in the UK seems to be targeted for an affected by most legislation these days. Read the information on this link http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/about-us/news/deactivated-gun-ban And if you feel as strongly as we do then write a letter to your MP and local councillors telling them how you feel and asking that they reconsider the ill conceived proposal. Resources could be better directed towards the Police actually tackling real gun crime as opposed to criminalising decent citizens due tot he actions (alleged) of a tiny minority. Get behind this - WRITE TO YOUR MP AND MAKE PLAIN YOU DO NOT WANT THIS PROPOSAL MAKING LAW IF IT AFFECTS LAW ABIDING CITIZENS. We are not criminals. Why treat us as such? 05/01/2008      New additions to the family

Members of several groups took the decision to affiliate their groups to AFRA at their AGMs in 2007. This means the individuals will all be joining the Association and as a result, each electing a representative to take their place on the management committee. Several Individuals have also recently come on board including another Living History Photographer. Membership is growing rapidly and as such AFRA is spreading the message not only by word of mouth but by delivering results. read more »
